Recycling Organics

Story: Recycling Organics
Episode: 8
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Air Date: 10th October 2020

Neville heads to Bassendean to chat to Mayor Renee McLennan about the town’s new 3 bin system, FOGO, and how it’s benefiting the environment.

  • FOGO stands for Food Organics and Garden Organics. Food organics include all of your kitchen scraps, while garden organics is your green waste.
  • The city wanted to make the transition to the FOGO system as easy as possible for residents and provided every household with a caddy and compostable liners.
  • It’s extremely important that the right material goes into the right bin, so sorting the waste correctly is crucial.
  • Before to FOGO, more than 50% of the contents of rubbish bins was made up of organics that went to landfill. In landfill, they break down and produce methane and acidic material.
  • Now, this waste is taken to the Red Hill Waste Facility where modern composting technology converts it into high-quality compost.
  • This compost will come back to the city to be used in parks, sporting facilities and public gardens. It will also be available for residents to use in their own gardens.
