The African Savannah was one of the Zoo’s first exhibits built to mimic wild habitats.
- The pathway emulates a dry river bed, the tree house, grasses and cycads provide an immersive savannah experience.
- The Savannah opened in 1991 and covers 3 acres of the Zoo – more than 95 per cent of the plants in it are notable African species (Kie Apple, Sausage Tree, Natal Plum).
- The wetlands and Penguin habitat area was designed to represent similar habitat found in the wild at Penguin Island, and the wetlands modeled around Herdsman Lake.
- Browsing is a type of herbivory in which a herbivore feeds on leaves, soft shoots, or fruits of high-growing, generally woody plants such as shrubs.
- They utilize a lot of the material for enrichment purposes making sure the animals get what they need nutritionally for their diet.
