Dr. Darryl explains how Scale and Mealybugs are a pest that in plague proportions can really set your favourite plants back, and how best to take control of the problem.

• Like aphids these are sucking insects and are more successful when tended by ants.
• The ants provide protection from predators and parasites in return for a steady supply of honeydew.
• Scale and Mealybugs do particularly well on many indoor plants because predators and parasites generally are excluded from these areas.
• Horticultural oils and Insecticidal soaps are very effective on these pests and allow predators and parasites to persist, if ants are also kept under control.
• Remember when using registered chemicals, read the label fully and always follow the directions and use the stipulated safety equipment.
