- Spring is here and the temperature is rising meaning fruit fly will be on the move.
- Fruit fly have been an issue for gardeners in most parts of Australia for over 100 years.
- Qfly in Qld, NSW, NT, Vic, and Medfly in WA.
- The four methods to reduce or eliminate fruit fly as an issue are: Hygiene/Sanitation, Exclusion, Lure and kill and Bait spraying.
- The best methods to employ will depend on your, location, plant hosts and previous experience.
- For example, if you live in a metro area and you have an apricot or peach tree then your only real option will be to exclude flies with appropriate netting.
- Biosecurity is a shared responsibility. Everyone must play their part to stop the introduction and spread of pests and diseases.
- Early detection and reporting are key to eradicating and managing pests.
