Story: Edible or Flowering plant of the week
Episode: 07
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 8th October 2022
Trevor teaches us how to sow direct from seed! And demonstrates just how easy it is to do while remaining cost effective!
- Direct sowing is planting the seeds right in the garden or pot, in their final growing position.
- Growing from seed gives you the benefit of direct sowing which some varieties need to thrive.
- There is not transplant shock or root disturbance when seeds are directly sown.
- When direct sowing, you must have a well-prepared bed that is suitable for seed germination and maintain moisture level to ensure the seedlings thrive.
- You must also plant in the correct season and be mindful of the weather. E.g., sowing you seeds when rain is expected can reduce your need to water them and increase your chance of success.
- You can direct sow with ease using Mr. Fothergill’s seed or seed tapes. Tapes have the advantage of not having to space crops or thin seedlings.
- The key to success when direct sowing is to lightly cultivate the soil first, then sow directly on top of the cultivated soil before watering the seeds into the top 2 to 3 cm of soil. Then for a week, lightly water the soil by hand each day.
