Nigel shows us the living fossils of Wollemi National Park.

• Rediscovered in 1994, the Wollemi Pine is a living fossil found in the remote Wollemi National Park, Australia, dating back to the time of dinosaurs.
• Belonging to the ancient Araucariaceae family, this rare conifer is estimated to be over 200 million years old, with fossil evidence dating back to the Mid-Cretaceous period.
• With only 100 known wild specimens remaining, extensive research has been conducted over the past 30 years to safeguard the Wollemi Pine's survival.
• Scientifically known as Wollemia Nobilis, this unique tree features dark green foliage, distinctive bubbly bark, and multiple trunks.
• Wild Wollemi Pines can reach impressive heights, with the largest specimen standing at 40 meters tall and boasting a main trunk width of 63 centimetres.
• Male and female cones are produced by the same tree on separate branches, typically appearing between 12 and 15 years of age.
• Efforts to protect and conserve the Wollemi Pine are ongoing, aiming to ensure the continued existence of this ancient species for future generations.
