Turn an ordinary verge into a vibrant, low-maintenance native garden that supports wildlife, conserves local plants, and enhances your street’s appeal.

• Traditional verges are often bare, weedy, or poorly maintained. Native verge gardens transform these spaces into attractive, thriving ecosystems that benefit both people and wildlife.
• Choose endemic or locally suitable plants, a mix of shrubs, groundcovers, and clumping plants ensures year-round interest and colour. Know the maintenance needs of each species for best results.
• Improve soil with compost and clay, plant in shallow bowls to retain water, add a seaweed solution and wetting agent, and finish with a thick mulch layer for water efficiency.
• Careful plant choice means minimal irrigation is needed; targeted hand watering during hot months is often enough, though irrigation can be a backup.
• Native verges cool the area, provide habitat for birds, lizards, and pollinators, and help conserve local, endemic plants threatened by habitat loss.
