Waterwise Design ? Barrabool Hills Garden

Episode: VIC Waterwise Special ? Our Changing Climate
Presenter: Melissa King

Barrabool Hills Maze and Garden sits on 1.6 hectares near Ceres, West of Geelong, in a rain shadow created by the Otway Ranges, making it one of the states driest areas.

For people that live down that way, water restrictions are the norm. They have been in force since January 1998 and what is astounding is that even in these conditions, the owners, Richard and Sarah Seccull, have created an incredible oasis that consumes virtually no water.

Richard and Sarah chose tough, beautiful plants that are suited to the challenging conditions at Barrabool Hills.

Dry or not, it is a garden that draws on the principles of good design. The plants are arranged to make the most of foliage, flowers and form. Robust Australian plants mingle with hardy exotic shrubs, grasses and flaxes. Cacti and succulents make bold foliage features throughout the year and tough, attractive roses and perennials bring seasonal interest to the garden.

When Melissa first saw this garden a few years back it changed the way that she thought about dry climate gardening. It is proof that with good design skills and a palette of fascinating and unique plants that have adapted to dry climate conditions, you can satisfy that craving that we all have for a garden that is both beautiful and practical.
