Paula Knight

Episode: New Zealand? Bay of Plenty
Presenter: Melissa King

Art and landscapes are such natural combinations and what better inspiration than New Zealand?s wild coast.

Paula Knight creates the most vibrant acrylic paintings which reflect her love for an unspoilt paradise. Paula recreates natural New Zealand with images of the Nikau Palm that is found in coastal and warmer inland forest of the NorthIsland plus parts of the south. This is the most southerly naturally occurring palm in the world.

The Poor Knights Island Lily (Xeronema callistemon) is a real treasure. It grows wild on the rocky outcrops and cliffs of PoorKnightsIsland of the east coast and it thrives on the salts spray and has showy bottlebrush type flowers.

Nothing says New Zealand quite like flax dotted wild across the landscape. It was essential to the Maoris who used it to make clothes, fishing line, mats and baskets. On canvas light and movement are captured in the dramatic foliage.

The pohutukawa or New Zealand Christmas tree (Metrosideros exceisa) is such a feature of the local coastal regions of the north island. It gets its common name from the scarlet flowers which appear around Christmas time.

Paula?s paintings have a contemporary slant on a wild environment and they make you want to jump in and explore more of New Zealand?s pristine coastline.
