How and When to Water

Presenter: Phil Dudman

Water is precious so it is vital that we gardeners use it in the most efficient way possible and if you keep a few simple rules in mind it is really quite easy to be a first rate waterwise gardener.

The first is timing, always water early morning or late afternoon as that gives your water a chance to soak deep into the soil before the sun and wind start to draw it away from the surface.

Also try to get that water as close to the roots as possible, right where it is needed. Don’t waste it by pouring it over the leaves and trunk and even pull the mulch aside if you have to.

There is a new saying, ‘water deeply not daily’ and it makes a lot of sense. Deep watering encourages the plant to develop a deep root system which means you won’t need to water it as often.

If you have never used a wetting agent before then do give it a try. A wetting agent will help your soil absorb water quickly so there is very little wasted and your plants get the moisture they need.

One last but important tip, just because it is your day to water it doesn’t mean you have to! Take a tip from your plants as they will let you know when they really need a drink, so always look out for the signs first.
