Your Garden Questions Answered
Presenter: Phil Dudman
Phil visits ‘Rosoola’, a beautiful private garden in Mango Hill north of Brisbane and it is open to the public on the 13th May 2007 as part of Australia’s Open Garden Scheme. You will get some great design ideas here, but the owners have also asked us to help them out with a typical garden problem.
In the shade, they love to grow Clivias other wise known as fire lily (Clivia miniata) and they are a hardy bulbous plant with gorgeous blooms. But occasionally they fall victim to vicious attacks from Lily Caterpillars where the leave will appear to look like they have been massacred.
So the burning question is what can we do about it? Well Phil just can not resist the urge to clean the lot up. Do not hesitate get yourself a good sharp pair of secateurs and get rid of the worst effected leaves.
It will look much tidier. Next you will need to spray to control these gluttonous caterpillars. Something organic that you could use is Yates Success and when it is sprayed on caterpillars it sorts them out really fast. When you are spraying it on just make sure you cover all the foliage, as well as the undersides. The best time to do it is in the cool of the early morning or late in the evening.
The next thing you need to do is give the roots a really good drenching and when the soil is bone dry try using Yates Waterwise Soil Wetter. That will help the water to really penetrate the soil, which means you will use a lot less water. The Wetting agent product has seaweed extract added as well and that is just the thing to promote healthy new growth.
Just for a month or so keep the soil moist and follow up with a spray once a week and Phil promises you that your Clivias will be bursting with health and vigour. Now if you have got any questions about gardening why don’t you check out our online garden club, there are lots of great benefits and some super prizes to be won when you join, just follow the link from the homepage for more details.
