Your Garden Questions Answered
Presenter: Melissa King
One of the best lessons we have all learnt from this dry summer is that many plants really don’t need as much water as we thought they did. In fact there have been some real surprises. So Melissa drops in to Acorn Nursery, an outstanding Water Saver Garden Centre in Surrey Hills to get some insight into what is hot.
Melissa was happy to see just how well some of the annuals toughed it out this season, particularly showy varieties like bedding Begonias (Begonia Hybrid Cultivar, ‘Semperflorens Group’) and brightly coloured Vincas (Catharanthus roseus cv.). Beds of Vincas and Begonias at the nursery were only waters twice a week, when it was allowed and they have held up surprisingly well. Definitely put them on your list for planting next spring.
As far as new season choices go Melissa thinks we should be getting some colour in and around the house with potted annuals like pansies and violas in pots. A few good tips Mel suggests to make your potted display thrive without using a lot of water. Always start with a good potting mix with added wetting agent, to aid water penetration and mix a generous amount of water storing crystals through the mix before planting.
Camellias are a lot more dry tolerant than we give them credit for. Even on the hottest driest days yeah a few leaves dried off, but nothing major. The Sasanqua in particular really proved their worth and they are now flowering their socks off. Sasanqua Camellia (Camellia sasanqua ’Setsugekka’) is a real gem with snow white flowers and golden yellow stamens. Sasanqua Camellia (Camellia sasanqua ‘Plantation pink’) is just as pretty and makes the ultimate screen with masses of large single pink flowers.
With so many of us making the most of grey water, garden centres have suddenly become experts on laundry detergents. Melissa speaks to Tony Allsop, Manager from Acorn Nursery about Laundry detergents.
Mel: Now Tony what do we need to look out for?
Tony: The main thing we need to look out for is salts and phosphates, we know about phosphates and enzymes being bad, but salts are the hidden key to a lot of laundry detergents, and laundry detergents can be very bad for your garden unless you are using a low salt low phosphate detergent like the Lighting range that is available from Acorn nursery.
Acorn Nursery is award wining and the only retail garden centre in Australia to make it into the nursery industry hall of fame, quite an achievement, so it is a top place to get advice on how to revitalize the garden!
