Bare Rooted Roses
Presenter: Dean Boone
Autumn is the traditional start of the bare rooted rose planting season. Each year, Australians plant about 2 million new roses and now is the perfect time to explain to you how to do it.
Firstly, bare rooted roses are a great way to get into gardening. The varieties are endless and they don’t cost a lot. You can buy them online, by mail order, or from you local garden centre.
Dean has chosen three of his favourite fragrant varieties, the first is McLeod’s Daughters which is a collaboration between the show and Gawler health foundation.
His second choice, Red Pierre Rose (Rosa, Modern Climber, ‘Red Pierre de Ronsard’) a deep rich red rose that holds well as a climber. The Third, Fiona’s Wish, also a fundraising rose of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
Planting bare rooted roses is straight forward, use good rich, free draining soil, improve it with some organic matter if you need to and then create a small mound in the centre. Spread the roots out and back fill with more of that lovely soil.
To give the roses a real boost Dean suggests applying something new, Yates Dynamic Lifter for Roses. Everyone knows dynamic lifter and now there is a special mix that roses will just love. Simply sprinkle some on the soil surface when you plant and the job is done.
Dynamic Lifter for roses combines rich composted chicken manure with all those extra nutrients roses need for healthy growth. The result will be good strong growth, great disease resistance and lots of luscious flowers.
Dean loves roses, and they are pretty tough plants for a water wise garden. It is good to know that by giving them this little bit of extra care, the results you want are going to happen.
