Winter Protection
Episode: # 9 02/06/07
Presenter: Dean Boone
Winter is often considered the time of year to do very little in the garden. It is often more the case that the weather is better outdoors for being in the garden now, so here are some simple tasks to keep yours to look great.
Every garden can benefit from mulching. In winter it helps to further conserve water losses but also insulates the plants from the cold and from the drier conditions we often experience.
Adding some aged manure to the soil or even a light feed with Dynamic Lifter will help the garden have all the nutrition it needs for spring and also help build the soil structure.
Another common problem is protecting sensitive plants that may be affected by a sudden cold snap or a frost. You can move your plants indoors if they are in pots or build a frame and apply a clear plastic cover at night.
If you don’t have the time to do either then Dean suggest using something like Yates Ready to use Stressguard.
This is a product that helps to protect plants from damaging conditions like water loss and light frosts by forming a protective clear film over leaves which can last for up to 60 days.
What it does is helps improve plant survival and recovery from stressful conditions and it reduces water loss in plants by up to 50%. So if your garden is already struggling, then this is going to be a must.
Combine all these ideas – mulch, manure and stressguard and your garden should be on the path to recovery and in perfect working order.
