Interlink Roads

Episode: # 9 02/06/07
Presenter: Dean Boone

Growing interest in climate change means many of us are now focusing on how we can minimise our carbon emissions in our day to day lives. To offset the environmentalimpact of the cars we drive, urban landscapes like the M5 motorway play a vital role in helping our environment.

Interlink Roads operates the M5 motorway, which is the major transport corridor running right into Sydney from the south west.Thousands of vehicles use this vital piece of infrastructure every single day. One of the features of the motorway is its estimated 45,000 native trees in its 150 hectares of landscaping.

All this vegetation has an important role in creating a natural corridor of native plants in towards the city.

Dean spoke with Rex Wright the General Manager from Interlink Roads:

Rex: It screens the community from the road and it provides a natural and relaxing vista for passing motorists.

We have got 20 areas along the motorway in various positions along the 22 km, which we have identified to regenerate. We will plant a total of about 10 000 trees each of which will soak up many hundreds of kilograms of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide per year.

Dean says one of the trees that is growing in these areas is going to absorb about 230 kilograms of carbon Dioxide and live for about 30 years. So by Deans that is about 10,350,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide and it is all done silently and efficiently.

Interlink Roads has an ongoing partnership with the native plant experts at Mt Annan Botanic Gardens. You too can get tips on how planting native plants can minimise your environmental impact.

Just use the M5 and take the Narellan Road Exit, then just follow the signs to the gardens.
