Potted Colour for Spring

Presenter: Dean Boone

1st September 2007

Spring is here so have a play and let the Garden Gurus show you how to have the best looking pot plants in the street. This little project is dead simple, totally indulgent and just loads of fun to do.

Colour, colour and more colour. Everyone can do with a little bit of a lift coming out of winter and potted colour is the perfect way to do it. All your local nurseries are going to be stocking up and getting ready for a mass rush from gardeners coming in to get that some special.

Now whether you are in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Darwin or Perth, there is something that you can be planting this weekend.

In colder climates you may still be able to get flowering cyclamen (cyclamen persicum cv.) and they are just dead easy to grow.

If you are in milder climates, why not take a look at some of the new little varieties of Brachyscome Daisy (Brachyscombe, Hybrid Cultivar). They are a native daisy and they do brilliantly in pots.

Just about everyone is going to be able to grow gorgeous annuals of one sort of another, regardless of climate. Take your pick.

There are also four new releases of a great plant, Heuchera, which is from the café club series. There are four colours, caramel, mocha, citronella and a brownie. They do not like full sun and only need a little but of moisture to get them established. They do well to brighten a dark corner or in a pot.

Now here is a tip for getting your potted plants looking absolutely perfect. It is all in the mix so to speak. What ever you put into this pot is what the plants are going to get out of it. So you absolutely must start with the right ingredients. No shortcuts just use a premium potting mix of the very best quality.

native daisies, are versatile plants that are an ideal choice for a wide range of garden styles.

colour to rockeries, brachyscomes are fantastic. You can also grow them in window boxes,
hanging baskets and mixed patio pots. Fabulous for early and continuous colour.

mauve blooms are two hybrid varieties bred in Australia for local conditions. The plants have a
compact, rounded growth habit and feature fine, dense green foliage. … an ideal weedsuppressing
groundcover. Frost tolerant.

New in 2007 – The Pacific Series
The Pacific series Brachyscomes are delightful Australian native daisies that all have a compact
habit, good flower form and size, healthy foliage and contrasting flower colours including pink,
yellow and mauve. These easy-to-grow plants are ideal for containers, gardens and
landscaping uses. Their quick, low-growing, spreading habit makes them equally suited to
ground cover and hanging basket usage, plus they’re a natural in combination plantings.

Pacific Island#

Pacific Island equally suited to patio pots and garden borders.

# PBR eligible

Flowers
Flowers throughout the year.

Height
These varieties are quick and easy to grow, growing to approximately 25cm in height and up to
1m diameter

Use
Brachyscomes are ideal for pots, gardens, hanging baskets and large landscape sites.

Planting
Brachyscomes have a dainty appearance but are remarkably hardy. They thrive in full sun or
dappled shade and prefer well-drained soil and are equally at home in the open garden or
containers. Once established, the plants will tolerate both hot dry conditions and light frosts.
They will also withstand coastal conditions. For mass planting, plant 75-100cm apart, depending
of speed of cover required,

Watering
Although they will tolerate dryness, the plants will reward you with brilliant floral displays if they
are kept moist in hot, dry weather.

Fertiliser
An application of slow release fertiliser specially formulated for Australian native plants will also
help promote vigour and health.

Pruning
A light trim after each major flower flush will help encourage strong, compact growth but is not
vital for success.

Pests and Diseases
The plants are seldom attacked by pests, but if aphids appear they can be hosed off the plants
with a strong jet of water. Alternatively, apply an appropriate insecticide at the rate
recommended by the manufacturer.
Mites can be an issue, Miticidi can be used for best results.
