Water Saving #1
Presenter: Melissa King
Episode: 20 (8 September 2007)
The Garden Gurus are doing a series of episodes on the average house hold and how to save water, the easiest way possible. Melissa’s brother has a very typical family, in a typical Melbourne suburb and they use a typical amount of water. Over 11 weeks they will be working with a Water Wise guru to change their water habits.
The first step in the make over is an assessment by a water conservation expert.
The process begun with Measuring the flow rate in the kitchen and the bathrooms, this was done by turning the taps on full and measuring how full a jug got within 5 seconds.
The King family’s Kitchen tap used 1.5 litres in 5 seconds, equivalent to 18 litres per minute which is very high. To fix this it is recommended to put a flow control valve or an aerator on the kitchen tap. That is simple attachment that will reduce the taps flow rate thus reducing your water wastage. The bathroom tap used approximately a litre in 5 seconds, which means it is running at 12 litres per minute. In a bathroom 6 litres per minute is all you really need; as generally you only wash your hands. An aerator would be used for the bathroom so the water flow can be modified to 6 litres per minute. Many bathrooms already have aerators; these will need to be replaced.
The King’s already have quite an efficient toilet, so it has been recommended to put system weights in the back of the toilet, which means that when you push the flush button, the water will run only as long as you hold the button down.
Next Week tune in for the Water Wise Garden make over.
