What to do – Potted Colour with Pohlmans 10 Pots

Presenter: Phil Dudman
Episode: 20 (8 September 2007)

Spring has officially arrived in Queensland and if you feel like your garden is crying out for some colour, then some good old-fashioned annuals may be the answer. You do not need to be using lots of water all you need is just a few pots of colour to really make it feel like spring has arrived at your place.

Pots give you so much control. You can control the amount of water they get and when you use a saucer you can make that water go further by using it on other plants. When it gets hot and windy you can always move your pots to a protected spot, which saves even more moisture. The other thing is that you can place your pot of colour into any space at any time to give it an instant lift.

When you are looking for instant colour, it is hard to go past instant 10 pot packs. The packs contain 10 super-sized seedlings already in full bloom, so you can have the colour this weekend. If you are short on time you can just throw one or two of these on a table as they are to brighten the area before your friends drop round for that BBQ.

This season you will still find a few pansies about and they will keep going up to November. Snapdragons are back in style and the dwarf forms make a great show. Marigolds are exceptionally hardy and so are petunias which are very water-wise and for something tough and long lasting, you have got a great range of perennials to choose from.

When you are potting always start with a good quality potting mix, add some water crystals, that will help hold the moisture in and when it comes to annuals add a little extra slow release fertiliser because they are pretty hungry. If you want a really super show then give them an extra boost with a liquid fertiliser, one that is made for flowers at least once every fortnight.

One last water-saving tip: there is no reason why you cannot be mulching the tops of the pots to help hold the moisture in too. Just do not let it get too close to the base of the plants or they will rot.

So there you go; you do not need a lot of water to colour up your garden this spring. Just get a few pots of colour going near the front door or around a courtyard and you will give your place an instant lift. And do not muck around, get into it this weekend.
