Who to turn to for advice – Acorn Nursery
Episode: # Waterwise Special 24th November 2007
Presenter: Neville Passmore
The best time to plan a water efficient garden is before you finish building your house. But even if you have an existing garden, who can you turn to for accurate advice to get the right plants?
Accredited Water smart Garden centres, such as Acorn Nursery in Surry Hills Melbourne is a shining example. They have the expertise with specifically trained staff that is a wonderful resource from which you can draw local expert knowledge.
Staff in this nursery has been working here most of their adult life and apart from being highly qualified and very experienced they all share a real passion for plants.
You will always find colourful displays to inspire and there’s a strong emphasis on plants appropriate for your area and water efficiency. There are also waterwise products that include organic soil improvers, mulch such as sugar Cane waste as well as soil wetting agents to make planting a success.
Drought and water restrictions have proven the toughness of many of our old favourite plants and established roses are a great example. The show of climbing Graham Thomas, one of the David Austin collection, is growing brilliantly in the car park. The climbing Pierre De Ronsard (Rosa, Large- Flowered Climber, ‘Pierre de Ronsard’) growing on the fence just breathtaking.
Planting trees is good value for the home environment and is also a way of cooling the planet, one backyard at a time. Some of the top performers include the Ornamental Manchurian Pear (Pyrus ussuriensis) with its glossy foliage, the Golden Robinia with its chartreuse coloured leaves which contrast wonderfully with the Black Leaf Plum (Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’).
You will find a selection of ornamental Aussie natives including the dazzling Kangaroo Paws, stylish Emu Bush (Eremophila nivea) and some close relies of our grevilleas the proteas of South Africa.
The drought has increased the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables and has spawned a huge interest in home grown produce. Most are grown organically and many homeowners are rediscovering the joy of fresh from the garden herbs vegetables and fruit.
Garden centres are great spots to get back in touch with nature with expert help and advice so you can enjoy success.
