Garden Gurus Seedlings and PowerFeed

Episode: #28 8/12/07
Presenter: Melissa King

How would you like to enjoy fresh summer salads or char grilled vegetables straight from your backyard? Well now is a great time to get excited about the kitchen garden.

Creating a veggie garden is an investment in your taste buds and a healthier lifestyle. When you grow your own, you are not just getting improved flavour and freshness; garden picked produce is also jam-packed with nutrition.

You can grow your vegetables in a dedicated veggie patch or if you are lacking space pop a few in amongst your flowers, they are often just as decorative.

If you like it hot, chillies are a great choice, they are ornamental and if you are a city gardener they are perfect for pots or containers on the patio or balcony and most of all they are also great for spicing up your cooking.

If, like Melissa you love the numbing effects of a great chilli dish then The Garden Gurus ‘El Toro Bull Horn’ will certainly set your taste buds a light.

Nothing is better than home grown vine-ripened tomatoes; they are so rich in flavour. If you want superior taste the Garden Gurus recommend ‘Piccolo Roma’. It’s a delicious mini Roma tomato that is tops for flavour.

‘Abruzzi Bruschetta’ is another favourite that is hard to beat, with large beefsteak-type fruit – in other words a meaty texture and rich flavour. As the name suggests it is a great one for Italian-worthy Bruschetta.

A Garden Gurus gourmet addition to your stir fries – Broccolette. It is a cross between Chinese Kale and Broccoli, so it is multi stemmed and it can be planted year round, which means you can get your seedlings in the ground now along with baby butter lettuce, with sweet and tender leaves. Harvest them leaf by leaf for side salads or cut the head whole. Then there are Red spring Onions, which make a lovely decorative garnish.

It is important to know how your food has been grown. So when it comes to veggies I would use an organically based fish fertilizer like Seasol It is incredibly nutritious and it is also boosted with extra nitrogen, potassium and a little bit of phosphorus so plants are very happy. On top of that it contains Concentrated Liquid Composts so it simultaneously conditions the soil. Because it is a liquid, PowerFeed
