Holman’s Industries Water Controllers

Episode: #28 8/12/07
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

The key to life is water and the key to success in a garden is using it effectively. Well designed irrigation systems save water because they deliver it to the plants roots not all over the place, good ones also make looking after your garden dead easy because they are automatically controlled

Once upon a time automated watering systems were expensive, complicate to manage and only the keenest people used them. Today systems are dead easy to install, cost effective and the controllers come in a huge range of types and sizes for all purposes. And thanks to Holman Industries an Australian company they are easy to set up and use. Trevor has road tested their controllers and here are his recommendations.

The good old tap timer, a mechanical device is brilliant for small gardens. Trevor found one that waters continuously for up to 120 minutes before automatically turning off. The problem with these systems is that whilst they are cost effective you have to manually turn them on which is why going for a programmable tap timer is a better idea.

These can be set up as a fully automated single outlet system allowing for long run times and allows you to set a day, a start and run time. These battery operated systems are rain sensor ready and are great for new lawns, hot houses and brilliant for drip irrigation systems. They are slightly more expensive but deliver outstanding value for money.

If your system requires a little more sophistication then the ‘dialEZY’ compact irrigation controller may be the go. Again tap mounted it has the rain sensor switch which turns the system off if there is rain about and it provides great flexibility for watering different areas or garden styles. It gives individual day selection or odd/even day selection if your water restrictions demand it and has up to 6 stations or valves which are operated of a 24 volt battery. This is brilliant for the more technically challenged people with smaller gardens because the programming of the system is simple.

Now if your garden is a bit bigger than the water-whiz should be considered. This one is a fully automatic tap mounted system. The controller is plugged into the mains power and the manifold screws onto the tap give 4 outlets. Its rain sensor ready meaning you can add a gutter mounted rain sensor and it gives you complete watering flexibility. You can use one of these on the front garden and another on the back delivering the most cost effective watering system possible. Plus the programming is simple, just follow the prompts.

Lastly, for a midsized to large garden, one that is a bit more serious then the best value in town is ‘dialEZY Gardener RSR’. Fully automated, long run times, 2 individual programs allowing the gardens watering to be tailored to suit the various areas and styles, it has multiple start times, optional watering days and its rain sensor ready a very important feature for the water efficient gardens of the future. This system suits larger gardens and will run PVC, drip irrigation and allows you to change watering times and days if restrictions change, surprisingly a feature not commonly found in controllers meaning you have to turn your system off all together most of the time to comply with changing levels.

This new technology is designed to make programming logical and therefore very easy to set up. You literally set the time of day, day of the week for each program which is all or a selection of your stations or valves that will be watered in your watering schedule.

Remember, the best way to check you have got it right is to run a test cycle. If you are having problems it is nice to know that Holman’s Industries train the retail shop staff that sell their products on how to use them and if all else fails you can always contact them direct via the web www.holmanindustries.com.au
