A new state of the art reticulation controller
Episode: # 29 15/12/07
Presenter: Kim Syrus
Kim is always on the lookout for new products at his local irrigation specialist Butlers Pumps and Irrigation and this week he found a beauty. It’s an automatic controller that not only works out how much water your garden needs, it even saves water and it comes with it’s very own weather station.
The well priced Smartline SL800 looks like your average controller but there’s a lot more to it. On one side of the dial it has all the usual features, like start times and watering days, but on the other side, it takes watering to a new level. When connected to the On-Site Weather Station, this unit can actually work out your garden’s watering needs according to soil type, plant type and how you’re applying the water. It even asks for latitude, so it can work out the solar radiation calculations for Adelaide.
The On Site Weather Station is easy to fit to a gutter or pergola and collects data such as temperature and evaporation rate. It sends this information back to the Smartline controller to help calculate the amount of water your garden needs for the next irrigation run. It even has a rain sensor that shuts down all watering if enough falls from the sky.
Most controllers irrigate by time and don’t take into account factors such a soil type or sloping ground which can be a real problem. In some soils once this top soil is wet; water simply runs off and is wasted. The Smartline changes the watering to suit the conditions; in this case it gives a number of short waterings over the irrigation cycle making sure each one soaks in before the next is applied.
The Smartline SL800 can easily go from a 4 station controller to a 6 or 8 station one by simply adding a module. It’s an easy to use unit that grows with your garden’s needs.
You buy a controller once but you pay for water every day so any way we can save it is really important. There are so many efficient water saving features on this Smartline SL800, we suggest you take a visit to one of Butlers Pumps and Irrigations 3 stores - City, St Agnes and the new one on Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Mile End and talk to the experts about this fantastic automatic controller and weather station.
