Kim’s Vegetable Garden
Episode: # 29 15/12/07
Presenter: Kim Syrus
This week Kim took an under performing couch lawn, sprayed it out, added plenty of organic matter, turned it all in creating a fantastic area ready for planting veggies.
A little order in the garden makes areas easier to maintain, so adding border’s is a great way to go. Hardwood slats with a couple of stakes attached are a quick and easy way to make up beds. They help define the garden and keep in the mulch. Leave room for paths and lay some newspaper and top with mulch to keep the paths neat and weed free.
When you’re putting in borders around the veggie garden, avoid using treated pine. Untreated hardwood is definitely the way to go.
The next thing to organise is watering; a water can is fine but how about using drippers. They
are an easy and efficient way of watering, just push together and peg in place. Adding a tap to each bed means you can turn an area off once the crop’s finished.
Because all veggies grow differently, it’s important to make sure some aren’t crowded out and shaded by others. It is best to put tall ones like sweetcorn and tomatoes at the back and shorter growers like capsicums, zucchinis and onions at the front. Put the plants you use a lot like repeat harvest lettuce and herbs in a place where they’re easy to pick.
Try some companion planting amongst your vegetables. Chives will improve the growth and flavour of your carrots and Basil not only gets your tomatoes up and growing but also help to repel those problem white flies.
A bumper crop of tomatoes try the Garden Gurus selection of reliable performers Salsa, Abruzzi Bruschetta and Red Mamma.
When you’ve finished planting, mulch the area, a mulch like pea straw is great. Then give everything a good drink with a seaweed extract. Don’t forget to keep them regularly watered and fed and watch out for those weeds.
