Maintenance of new lawns
EPISODE 1
STORY TITLE: Maintenance of new lawns
TX DATE: 4th of April
PRESENTER: Neville
- A beautiful green lawn is a real garden asset and sets off the rest of the landscape. Here are the easy steps to get an existing lawn into top gear looking its best all year round.
FEEDING
- If you use a controlled release fertilizer like this you only need to apply three times a year in autumn, spring and summer.?
- One handful per square meter then water in.? Applying more than a handful is not just false economy but excess fertilizers can leak into underground water systems and contribute to nutrient pollution of our rivers.?
MOWING
- Ideally mow your lawn every two weeks in the warm seasons and about every four weeks in the cooler seasons.
- And as a general rule cut the grass high so it looks a bit like a shag pile carpet. One of the benefits of this regular mowing is that you can let the clippings fall back onto the grass.? It is in fact a natural form of fertilizer.
WATERING
- Wetting agents really are worthwhile in WA and two applications one in spring and the second in autumn can make a great difference.
- Interesting that most gardeners who apply lawn beetle killers to fix patches in the lawn are actually victims of water repellent soil.? This is what wetting agents fix. Both granular and liquid forms are available and as long as you water them in well.
- Check your sprinklers to ensure they are watering evenly.? Place straight sided containers across the lawn and then run the sprinklers to see how long it takes to fill up to the 1cm level and you can also compare the delivery pattern across the lawn area.? Replace sprinklers that don?t cover effectively.
- If lawn is patchy particularly at the end of summer then a light top dressing with underlay and lawn reviver will get new growth jumping away.? This compost helps to hold moisture at ground levels and also supplies some nutrient to aid growth.? The amazing thing is that you can see the difference in just a couple of days.? Rake it into the surface then water it in again to get the compost through the leaves and down to the soil surface.?
WEEDING
- You can spray selective weed killers to combat particular weeds but it is most important that you look for sprays with the active ingredient bromoxynil when applying to broad leaf grasses or you could severely scorch your lawn.
