Kim explains the benefits of adding compost to the soil, how to make it and the different ways to do it.
Steps:
- Drainage is essential, especially if you have clay soil.
- Making your own compost is a great way to recycle your garden organics.
- Lawn clippings, chopped prunings, shredded newspaper and kitchen scrap are some of the basic ingredients.
- If you?re building a compost bin, it has to be big enough to take a cubic meter.
- The secret to a good compost is adding the ingredients in layers.
- There are plenty of composts ready to use at a garden center near you.
- For every 1 kilogram of organic matter you add to the soil, it holds an extra 14 liters of water.
- Drippers are important in a garden, it is especially important to lay them in an even grid throughout the bed.
- Zero Waste SA is a South Australian state government organization.
- They promote waste management practices as well as play an important role in sustainability.
- They provide grants to local councils, the waste industry and businesses.
- Zero Waste SA also assists industry with the development of markets for recovered resources and recycled materials.
- They also support research into waste management practices and issues.
