Kim explains the benefits of adding compost to the soil, how to make it and the different ways to do it.

Steps:

• Drainage is essential, especially if you have clay soil.
• Making your own compost is a great way to recycle your garden organics.
• Lawn clippings, chopped prunings, shredded newspaper and kitchen scrap are some of the basic ingredients.
• If you?re building a compost bin, it has to be big enough to take a cubic meter.
• The secret to a good compost is adding the ingredients in layers.
• There are plenty of composts ready to use at a garden center near you.
• For every 1 kilogram of organic matter you add to the soil, it holds an extra 14 liters of water.
• Drippers are important in a garden, it is especially important to lay them in an even grid throughout the bed.
