Flowering Plants
Story Title: Flowering Plants
Episode: Summer Garden Special
Date: January 15th 2010
Presenter: Sue McDougall
Summer and potted plants usually don’t go together. And at this time of the year, watering pots continually is a chore for many gardeners. Sue features some easy and innovative suggestions so you can have fun in the garden this summer.
Potting plants
- Steer clear of small pots, they dry out very quickly because of the limited amount of soil around the root system.
- When you’re choosing pots for a potted display is to make sure they’re big enough to hold a decent amount of soil.
- Yes, it will cost you a little more for potting mix now, but it’s definitely worth it in the long run. The extra soil around the roots is a bonus at this time of the year.
- The other main reason that potted plants suffer is because the variety of plants used is not suitable to the extreme conditions.
- A potted plant that is on paving in full sun on a 40 degree day will be experiencing temperatures way beyond 40 degrees.
- If you love local flora and only have limited room or have a really hot spot in the garden that you want to add some summer colour to. A multi planted pot of many different Australian varieties will look stunning for months.
Featured Plants
Verticordias
- Also known as the feather flower.
- These brightly coloured flowers dry this colour, so will keep flowering for a very long time.
Kangaroo Paws
- Their dark glossy green foliage contrasts beautifully with the fine foliage of the other plants and the flowers are bird attracting.
- If after a while the foliage starts to look a little tired, you can trim these plants back to ground level and they shoot away with fresh, lush foliage.
Scaevola
- Has a brilliant show all through summer and autumn.
- It hugs the ground and will trail over the side of the pot.
- This is another variety that can be trimmed back at the end of the flowering season hard and will grow back better than ever.
Australian plants supplied by Domus Nursery.
