Hydroponic and aquaponics systems are extremely effective innovations for growing vegetables when the temperatures hit 30 degrees plus. These systems use about 10% of the water needed for growing vegetables in soil. Neville sets up an Aquaponics system to grow both fish and veggies in his garden.

  • Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics.
  • The water from the fish tank circulates through the grow beds, which are filled with expanded clay or aquaclay.
  • Expanded clay is used as a soil substitute. Its super light and super absorbent so they take up lots of moisture to supply the roots of the vegetable and herb plants.
  • Nitrifying bacteria converts fish waste into plant available nutrients.
  • The water is then filtered by the plants such as tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce and other green leafy vegetables, returning by gravity or pump back to the fish tank, giving the fish clean water to live in.
  • Reduced water use & chemical use & reduces pesticide use when set up in a controlled environment.
  • Stops backbreaking work of digging the soil and weeding.
  • Can produce fish and plants all year round.
  • Aquaponics uses only about 10% of the water required for traditional gardening or aquaculture.
