Waldecks Yacon

Episode: 4
Title: Waldecks Yacon
Broadcast: Sunday Nov 27th 2016
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Trev shows us a sweet plant that grows incredibly well in our climate and tastes between a pear and an apple. The sugars are insoluble so it’s perfect for those of us who love eating but want to lose weight and keep healthy. Keep an eye out for the Yacon.

  • The yacón is a species of perennial daisy traditionally grown in the northern and central Andes from Colombia to northern Argentina for its crisp, sweet-tasting, tuberous roots.
  • This plant also happens to be pest-free and drought resistant, and so can be easily grown almost anywhere all year round as long as there is no frost.
  • Waldecks has been cultivating Yacon over the past 3 years and now has limited stock available for gardeners to grow their own plants in their garden and over a period of time multiply into a continuous supply.
  • Harvest in approximately 25 weeks. You can collect a few at a time without digging out the whole plant.
  • Grows into a large plant ( about 2m/6ft) with flowers similar to sunflowers and Jerusalem artichokes.
  • The plants die down after frost but the roots are sweeter. To store, dig and dry out for a couple of days in the sun if possible. Store in a dry, cool, not freezing and dark place.
  • Any roots left in the ground will grow the following year except where there are frosts.
  • Hurry in and get your yacon at Waldecks as numbers are limited.
