Episode: 1
Title: Mini Fruit Trees
Broadcast: August 19, 2017
Presenter: Melissa King

Today, Melissa King visits Wonga Park Primary School, to find out about a kitchen garden program that’s inspiring the next generation of green thumbs.

  • Wonga Park Primary School has been a part of the Melbourne Green-Wedge community for over 120 years.
  • The school is known for its kitchen garden, which teaches students about where their food comes from.
  • Melissa speaks with Jenny Kelly, Kitchen Garden Coordinator, who explains that the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program has been running for three and a half years.
  • Part of the program includes garden and kitchen classes - now part of the Year 3 and 4 curriculums – which teach students about gardening, and show them the process from garden to table.
  • Melissa then heads into the garden, where she shows the kids how to plant pint-size fruit trees, such as a dwarf peach, ‘Pyvert’ pear, White ‘Cherree’ cherry, and ‘Nectazee’ nectarine. Despite their small size, each of these trees yield full-sized fruit for the kids to enjoy.
  • Wonga Park Primary recognizes how important it is for kids to understand where their food comes from, which is what inspired this fantastic kitchen garden.
