This is an important time of year when it comes to shaping the plants in your garden. Here’s how you can do so without spreading disease.
- It is important to make sure your secateurs have a sharp blade. If they don’t, a simple sharpening tool will do the trick
- Pruning sick or diseased plants with a dirty blade can easily spread fungal diseases and viruses between your plants
- Dipping your secateurs in a bottle of white spirits will keep your blades clean. For larger cutting tools, simply wiping the blades down should do the trick
- Many of the disease problems we deal with in our home gardens are a result of introducing pests and diseases through cheap mulches or weeds in new pot plants, so make sure not to spread these across your garden
