Trevor shares his tips and tricks for growing beans in your veggie garden.
- Rotating crops across different plant families is absolutely crucial. If you try and grow the same plant in the same spot, it won’t have the nutrients it needs in the soil.
- Plant nitrogen fixing plants, like beans or peas, that capture nitrogen from the atmosphere and fix it into the soil.
- It is vitally important that you cultivate the soil. Add some rock minerals in following cultivation, or you can use a soil rejuvenator.
- Growing beans is not hard as long as your garden is in sun for most of the day.
- The important thing to do is stake them. There’s a few options for you, the wigwam being one of them.
- Stick 5 to 10 bamboo stakes in an upright structure and tie them together at the top.
- Plant your seeds around the base on the outside of the stake to ensure they get full sun. They’ll grab the stake and run to the top, producing beans and flowers all the way up.
- You don’t need to worry about feeding beans, as long as your soil preparation was sufficient. Boosting growth can mean the plant won’t produce flowers and beans.
- Don’t water them straight away. Leave them in the soil for the next two or three days and they’ll take off.
- Beans grow very quickly. You’ll be harvesting the first crop within 6 weeks and should have harvest up until Christmas.
