Winter is the perfect time to plant mint, a hardy herb that thrives in cooler weather and comes in an impressive range of varieties.

  • Originating in Europe, mint was introduced to Britain by the Romans 2,000 years ago, then taken to North Americas 300 years ago. There is also an Australian native mint that grows well in local gardens.
Mint spreads through stolons—vigorous surface runners that quickly take over garden beds—so it is best grown in pots, raised beds, hanging baskets, or stacker pots.
  • With 20–30 species and over 7,500 cultivars globally, mint comes in many flavour profiles. Trevor favourites include:
    • Common mint – perfect for sauces especially on roast
    • Apple mint – great to be added in jugs of water
    • Chocolate mint – taste like after dinner mints
  • Some tips for thriving mint are to harvest regularly to keep plants lush, feed weekly with a liquid fertilizer like Power feed and do not forget to wash leaves before use.
