Romancing the Stone
Episode: #18 18/8/07
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Tom Hogg has created an amazing garden, which he calls “Romancing the Stone”. It is as much about hard work as it is about romance. It is amazing.
INTERVIEW:
Trevor:
Tom this is an amazing bit of rock work through here, this is obviously a new section?
Tom:
Yes it is, this is actually the first section that I had done but I had only done it in loose stack which I was not happy with, so I pulled the whole lot down, re-designed it and re-laid it. And not I am very happy with it.
Trevor:
Tom there is a lot of heart that goes into this, you must really love what you are doing.
Tom:
Yes I do and I always used to say that when people asked me that question, but I re-assessed that about two years ago and thought, ‘how can I enjoy working 40 degree heat in the middle of summer’, these conditions so humid. And I though no it is the end result I love, that is what I am working for.
Trevor:
Well it is a pretty spectacular end result.
Tom the garden is full of great ideas now this has got to be the very best, it is a brilliant idea. How did you come up with it? (Stone fire/BBQ South African Style)
Tom:
Well I happened to spot it in a magazine and the idea just got me and I had to have one I could just see it and picture it here and 8 days later I built it. And now we enjoy it.
Trevor:
Tom this is fantastic.
Tom:
This is beautiful Trev, this is the blood plant and it just gives beautiful contrast with the waterfall and the other greenery.
Trevor:
How fantastic is this, absolutely beautiful!
Tom:
Yeah, well its growing pretty well now Trev, it was in very poor condition when it was first given to me by a lady who said she had a stag that needed some tender love and care.
Trevor:
Most people don’t actually realise that these are actually ferns; the way to pick it is the little spores under neath the frons as they are hanging down.
