Your Garden Questions Answered: Pruning Citrus
Episode: # 21 09/06/07
Presenter: Phil Dudman
There are eight beautiful gardens open to the public during the ‘Springtime on the Mountain’ Festival one of them is ‘Sargasso’. It is a huge escarpment garden on 8 acres of prime land on Mount Tamborine.
‘Sargasso’ is gardening on a grand scale with hundreds of semi-mature trees all laid out carefully to fit its classical, formal design. The garden has water features and statues carved from stone, bold arrangements of local rock and a series of winding creek beds that add real impact. It also boasts one of the most stunning views you’ll ever see.
The garden also boasts a fantastic fruit tree orchard with wonderful citrus trees.
The Gurus are often asked “How do you go about pruning overgrown citrus?” and thankfully we have the answer.
Firstly all dead wood has got to go. Sometimes you may have to prune out a lot to create a main leader.
Next, it is important to reduce the overall size of the tree.
It is important when reducing the size of the tree to not just trim away at the tips of the plant, doing so can remove all flower buds and decrease your chances of fruit for next year.
Instead, choose a few of the weaker leaders to remove completely, being careful not to remove any more than about 20% of the total volume of the tree.
By following these simple steps you can reduce the size of the tree without sacrificing a good crop for next year.
