Fruiting Trees

Story Title: Fruiting Trees
Episode 1: WA's Great Gardens
Date: 23 May
Presenter: Neville Passmore

Learn how to grow your own fruit at home. This will be a very rewarding activity and the result is freshness and flavour that you can't buy.

Neville's Tips and Facts

  • Try growing your own olives and citrus trees in pots.
  • Espaliers were developed in Europe around the 16th century as a way of helping temperate climate fruit grow in colder regions.
  • Use climbing plants which often have additional virtues such as Nellie Kelly passionfruit.
  • Nellie Kelly Raspberry can also be trained up wires to make the best use of three dimensional spaces.
  • One of my favourite berries is the blueberry, one of nature's super-foods because of the vitamins and minerals that are pumping out from their tissues. They grow to around a metre, need light, shade and an acid reacting soil just like azaleas.
  • Strawberries crop across nine months of the year and just love a sunny raised bed. When planting, always try to give your fruiting plant maximum sunlight and choose the best varieties around.
  • Prepare the soil with copious quantities of organic material and remember that these plants are heavy feeders because of the productive role they play. Be prepared to feed them often to keep that flow of fresh fruit flowing.
