Neville's Tips and Facts

  • Beans and their close relatives peas, lentils, and pulses come in more forms than you can imagine.
  • Try growing a selection which includes snow peas, sugar snap peas, runner and broad beans, soy products as well as breakfast staples baked beans, then there's dried beans and lentils.
  • You can start beans as well as peas from packet seeds and some seedlings. Many are climbers so we will need some supporting structures.
  • If you are restricted for room, bamboo stakes are a good place to start. You can make a bean tepee by tying off bamboo stakes at the top.
  • Plant the seeds around the base and as they grow they'll fill in the walls making a living cubby for kids. Or you can make a wall of beans or peas with a woven lattice of bamboo. The possibilities are endless, giving you some structure for decoration in your garden.
  • Dwarf French beans can be grown in pots and these are available as seedlings.
  • Planting time in the garden is right now so head down to your local garden centre and get started.
