Presenter: Kim Syrus
Most plants love to be watered however, too much or too little can create problems. The issue many of us face, is knowing how much water we need to put on and when.
Kim's Tips and Facts
- Plant roots require both water and air to do their very best and getting that balance right is very important. The soil should feel like a wrung out dish cloth, damp but not wet and maintaining this level of moisture will make your plants very happy. To work out if your soil needs watering or not, you could poke your finger in the ground around the yard or simply install a moisture sensor.
- Holman's moisture sensors do a fantastic job without getting your hands dirty. It will sense the moisture level in your soil without the need for cables, the monitor and the probe talk to each other wirelessly and let you know if the area needs watering simply by checking out the monitor's display.
- The Holman Wireless Soil Moisture Monitor and Probe are amazingly simple to use. Push the probe in the garden bed or area you want to keep an eye on and it will send a signal to the monitor, recording the soil moisture levels in that spot.
- For the best readings, push the spike in around 75mm for lawns and 100mm for garden beds. You can also add other probes to the yard, for the main monitor to pick up, that way, you'll have the whole place covered!
- This is a brilliant garden gadget. The monitor can read a probe up to 30 metres away so, no need to leave the house to see if the yard needs a water
- The Holman Wireless Soil Moisture Monitor and Probe has plenty of other useful features including a thermometer that records the outside and inside temperature. To get a more accurate outside reading, always place the probe out of direct sunlight.
- If you have a glasshouse or propagation area, you can set an alarm on the monitor to sound if the probe reaches a pre-set temperature. Really important to protect any plants from being damaged from high heat or frost.
- I think these new Soil Moisture Monitors from Holman are an excellent garden tool, saving you the problem of knowing when to water and help your garden look its very best. Keep an eye out for them at your local irrigation shop, garden centre or hardware store or check out the Holman website for more information.
- The Holman Wireless Soil Moisture Monitor and Probe available at all Bunnings stores from Friday the 4th February 2011.
