Plants to Suit Your Personality

Episode: # 30 22/12/07
Presenter: Nigel Ruck

Nigel reckons you can tell a lot about someone’s personality by the style of their garden and the type of plants that have in it. For example those with a formal garden with lots of clipped hedges are going to be the neat, tidy and fastidious types.

For those with plenty of testosterone running through their veins and like a bit of muscle then you can’t go past the Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco) with its big fat chunky trunk topped off with the big bowl foliage. They are a wonderful specimen with good drought tolerance, however they do cost a bit of money because they are slow growing.

For those people in touch with their feminine side, particularly the women, you can’t go past petunias, begonias, marigolds and pansies because they are small and dainty with lots of colour. These plants are fantastic in planter boxes and also in pots by the front door because they can help to brighten the home. Remember to use a good quality potting mix and they respond well to a liquid fertiliser.

For the laid back, easy going kind of person that you might find wondering around the Caribbean, with the dreadlocks flowing and the reggae music pumping you can’t go past the palms and bold foliage so they can get the tropical feeling. The Giant Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) is a beautiful plant that can take full sun or part shade and will grow to about 6 metres in height and will eventually form quite a big clumping ground or look sensational in pots and don’t forget they get that big bird of paradise flower.

For those people who are always cheerful, jolly and smiling you can’t go past the Happy Plant (Dracaena fragrans). It is an indoor plant but it is a good idea to take them outside regularly when raining to dust them off and bring them back to life.
