The Effects of Severe Drought

Local Queensland Guru, Phil Dudman looks closely at how water depravation is affecting some of the old and valued trees in our community and seeks expert advice of John Mulholland, an independent consulting arborist based in Brisbane. John believes that we must give our trees greater attention if we want them to remain for future generations to enjoy.
Typical Signs of Drought Stress:

  1. Dying back of foliage and twigs
  2. Splits in bark making them susceptible to pests and diseases

There are some simple tips on how you can give your own trees the best possible environment for healthy and successful growth especially during times of drought:

  1. Allocate water – waste water or recycled water from your home
  2. Mulching around the base of the tree
  3. Spraying them with anti-transparence
  4. Removal of competing plants from around the base
