The Story of Lone Pine
Lone Pine was one of a series of battles fought in August 1915 on Gallipoli, as the British attempted to revitalize their campaign.
The battle became known as Lone Pine due to the single pine tree which stood at the location where the battle was fought.
The battle of Lone Pine was very important, as it was where seven Victorian crosses were awarded and the Australians took vital ground, despite the overall campaign being unsuccessful.
Lance Corporal Benjamin Charles Smith of the Third Battalion, who lost his brother in the Lone Pine battle, sent several cones from the pine tree back to Australia.
Only two of the seeds from these cones were grown, one of which now stands at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Every year, cones from the Lone Pine are harvested by Yarralumla Nursery. The seeds are extracted and then germinated and planted out around Australia at various memorial parks and schools.

Featured Plant:

Lone Pine

The Lone Pine is a big tree, maturing at 20 metres in height with a spread of 15 metres, so it is not for every garden.
It prefers well drained soil, and needs protection from strong winds whilst young.
If you don?t have room in the garden for one, they work great in pot plants as well.
