Kids Garden and Cubby House

Episode: # 30 22/12/07
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

One of the projects on top of my priority list, when building my new garden was to develop a great area for our kids to be able to play in. There was a number of wishes and we have been able to achieve most of them. These wishes were things like a nice shade area so that my wife and kids could be sheltered on those really hot days, but still have an area to play. Plus, the area also has to look really good, ornate and with a nice entrance way. Then there were the practical considerations; swings and a cubby house were essential.

The whole design process ahs been quite a challenge but, bit by bit, we have developed something quite special. Firstly I pulled out the design board and set aside some space in the garden (about 12m by 9m). I decided we needed to put in a fence straight away. The picket fence was the first thing that came to mind, with those gothic pickets.

The enterance had to be architecturally attractive but also functional so I decided a rose arbour would be a brilliant feature. The kids cubby house I must admit I may have got a toyuch carried away with. We are not all Scott Cam and able to knock up a cubby house in a weekend so I recommend you get the right advice when it comes to design and construction.

For me it meant ringing an old mate of mine, Ron. Ron’s company Smart Timber designs custom garden features, pergolas and gazebos. They also provide kits which come in a range of standard sizes. His quality has always been brilliant which is an important consideration when it comes to any type of garden construction.

I took my sketch plans in to Ron, gave him rough area measurements and gave him the brief. He drew it up properly and gave me a quote for the whole lot installed, all of it to be delivered in kit form. It was that easy, six weeks later we had all the materials arrive in panel form and we got building.

In no time the area had evolved in to something special and we are now at the point of landscaping and painting the pickets. The kids are already of the time of their life in it. I decided to use great big outdoor bean bags to make the area comfortable for the kids and parents to relax in. The sandpit provides a large area to play in and the cubby house is a real hit and the perfect place for the kids to release lots of energy.

Getting the right advice and some help when you are designing any type of garden structure, particulary in building them, is absolotly critical and is where Ron and Steven from Smart Timber made this project so easy.
