Neville and Trevor reveal some interesting facts about the healthy and delicious fruit, the pear, before cooking a simple and yummy dessert.
Pears: Did you know?
- European pears are a richer source of dietary fiber than their cousins, the Asian or Nashi Pears.
- Pears are in season now, and will be right through winter.
- Growing pears are easy, and will survive in most Australian areas, with the exception of the tropics.
- The time to pick pears is when their skin colour changes from a rich green to a slight yellow blush. However, you can store green-skinned pears at room temperature for 3-7 days to ripen, before storing in a plastic bag in the fridge for a further 3 days.
- Pear wood is highly valued in the production of high-quality woodwind instruments.
