Mulching
Story Title: Mulching
Episode 7: WA's Great Gardens
Date: 21st November 2010
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Looking after our gardens has become challenging with dramatic rainfall reductions. One of the most important things we can do in the garden is mulch. A good waterwise mulch will protect the soil and limit moisture loss due to evaporation helping your garden to survive and saving you money!
Tips and Facts
- Currently, gardens use about 45% of average household water consumption.
- A well designed, carefully managed garden should get by on just 30% and this can be dramatically reduced if we utilize the rainwater and grey water options we all have available to us.
- Mulch is said to reduce water evaporation from garden beds by up to 70%.
- If you are using green waste, the cheapest form of mulch a layer 100 to 150mm thick will reduce consumption incredibly.
- If you are using composted mulch like Biowise you want at least a 100mm thick layer across your whole garden bed.
- Mulch for the garden is like what sunscreen is for our skin.
- A good waterwise mulch should hurt your feet if you take off your shoes and walk on it!
- Mulch has many benefits as well as saving water including:
- Protecting soil life
- Reducing weeds
- Reducing plant stress (if organic) break down over time and feed the soil
