Celebrity Gardener – Simon Westaway
Trevor joins celebrity gardener Simon Westaway in the hit new series ‘Underbelly’ to show us some fantastic plants and features in his own backyard.
Orange Jessamine (Murraya paniculata)- Deriving from India and Southeast Asia, it is an evergreen and also has small, oval berries
- Aromatic foliage and creamy white flowers which are strongly scented and closely resembles their relative the orange
- Flourishes in warm, frost free climate in full sun or part shade, keep in humus rich and well drained soil
- Clipping and pruning are essential to keep their shape
Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica)
- From Southeast and Eastern Asia ranging as far North as Australia there is about 50 species of evergreen and can range from small to large trees
- Some species have attractive smooth bark ranging in colour, their distinctive feature is brightly coloured flowers which have five crinkled petals
- Thrives in full sun, well drained, humus rich soil
- Clipping and pruning essential and be susceptible to powdery mildew
Fijian Fire Bush (Acalypha wilkesiana)
- Found in tropical and sub tropical regions it is a genesis of about 430 species of evergreen shrubs and trees, and annuals
- Cultivated for the variety of coloured leaves which are thin, oval to ovate, simple and toothed which can also have narrow spikes of crowded, feathery flowers
- Needs sunny to semi shade conditions with well drained, light soil and lots of watering in summer
