My Piece of Africa

Episode: # 30 22/12/07
Presenter: Nigel Ruck

Garden art has really taken off in recent years and with the right pieces you can really add some interest to your garden. One company that not only has a beautiful range but is also helping one of the world’s poorest communities is ‘My Piece of Africa’.

Nigel interviewed Aaron Jackson from ‘My Piece of Africa’.

Nigel: “Aaron, you have some fantastic pieces mate. Where did it all start for you?”

Aaron: “I’m a jeweller by trade Nigel and on a trip to Africa ten years ago I came across a couple of guys that were dabbling in some metal work and designing a few bits and pieces to develop a range. That’s where it started and we are going great guns.”

Nigel: “So it is all made in Africa.”

Aaron: “Yes it is made in Zimbabwe. That was one of the driving forces behind the business. We saw a need in the African community to be able to help the local people. There is not much employment throughout the country and a lot of unskilled labour. So we basically started developing a business where we could train people in the local community and employ as many people as we could. We are now at a stage where we employ fifty people who are now completely skilled in forms of sculpture. With each of those people we estimate would support a family and the local community of about twenty five people.”

Nigel: “So you have been going for ten years now Aaron, what’s the plans for the future?”

Aaron: “I’m quite excited about 2008. We’ve got plans to expand the range into using three key elements. Continuing with the metal theme but combining natural stone elements and timber to combine those into a various range of products. Again with the indoor, outdoor theme.”

Nigel: “So its not just gardens, you have inside aswell so it’s a big market and it seems to be going very well for you.”

Aaron: “It is going very well and we can see that the market is expanding. The indoor outdoor room is the way that things are going and we want to cater for that using those natural elements.”
