Trevor's Tips and Facts

  • The best way to turn your backyard into a tropical paradise is all in the plant choice. Choose a collectible feature of palms and bamboos as they are back in fashion.
  • Buy your tropical plants from a specialized nursery such as Palms Galore located just off the Kwinana freeway. This nursery covers over 5 acres and for anyone who loves the exotic and tropical looking gardens this is the place to visit, the range of Palms and Bamboo is fantastic and whilst buying them in Spring may seem strange because they never look their lush exotic best this time of year, planting them now ensures sensational growth and quick establishment in summer.
  • The thing about visiting a nursery like this is you find plants that are different and you get expert advice, from someone passionate about exotic and unusual plants. That's rare to find and whilst you're there, sit back, relax and enjoy a coffee too!
  • Speaking of rare, the nursery has specialised in rare and collectible plants for many years and if you want something different it's the place to go. One of the hottest new trends in gardens is planting bamboos, and not the old fashioned fast growing invasive runners, but the magnificent clumping forms. I've identified a few but Scott Harriden's advice is critical.
  • Bamboo is no longer a dirty word and if you want to create the perfect tropical paradise, it's hard to achieve if you don't use bamboo. Make sure you go for clumping varieties, but don't limit them to one style only, they are also incredibly functional. For instance they are brilliant screening plants, making a fast growing visual barrier between neighbours providing excellent privacy.
  • The important thing to remember is when you want something special, visit a special nursery, Palms Galore is located just off the freeway and the advice Dave and Scott can provide will be invaluable to creating paradise at home.
