Heide Museum of Modern Art

Episode: 2
Title: Heide Museum of Modern Art
Broadcast: 12th September 2015
Presenter: Melissa King

Gardens and art are inextricably linked and nowhere is more obvious than here at Heide Museum of Modern Art. Melissa chats with the curator, Kendrah Morgan who has a deep understanding of its artistic history.

  • Heide Museum of Modern Art began life in 1934 as the home of Melbourne couple John and Sunday Reed, one of the most important art benefactors in Australia. The museum has since evolved into one of Australia's most important cultural institutions.
  • John and Sunday were inspired by arts and craft as well as creating a kitchen/cottage garden and particularly inspired by the French market gardening early on to develop a self-sustaining lifestyle to grow their own vegetables and feed the artists staying out there.
  • They helped the artists out financially and materially by providing them food and a place to live when their art was not selling.
  • Whilst the museum honours John and Sunday’s legacy and Heide’s core would be exhibitions, the gardens are very important too as they are a sculpture park for public enjoyment as well as programs that celebrate the garden and seasonal produce in association with Café Vue.
  • Over a period of about 50 years, the Reeds transformed this place into a personal Eden with a rich tapestry of gardens, art and nature. Still today, Heide nourishes the minds and creative talents of some of Australia’s leading artists.
