Goulburn City of Roses

Episode: Three
Date: 22nd March 2008
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Story Title: Goulburn City of Roses

In March 1993, when the opening of the Goulburn bypass was imminent, a group of citizens conceived the dream of establishing Goulburn as a ?City of Roses?. A committee was formed with the aim of providing a tourist attraction to encourage people to visit Goulburn.
The first rose garden was established in Victoria Park in 1988 by the Quota Club of Goulburn. This garden has been greatly enlarged due in a considerable way to the generosity of Rose expert, Ben Swane, who donated over 1000 roses for this beautiful park. ?The Ben Swane Walk? has been created as a show of appreciation by the Committee.

The Committee has been operating for 15 years and is comprised of volunteer members whose aim is to enhance and increase the number of rose gardens in and around Goulburn. The Committee is linked with the Goulburn Mulwaree Council and liaises with them on the development and care of the city?s rose gardens. Committee members and friends, together with Parks and Gardens staff, are involved with the pruning of roses in January and July, and organising the Annual Rose Show.

The Goulburn City of Roses Committee stages a Rose Festival on the second weekend in March each year, with several thousand named blooms on display, and includes a competitive section, and commercial displays by local nurseries. The Festival is the main source of revenue for the Committee and profits go back into improving the public rose gardens.

The next Rose Festival will be held on 7 & 8 March, 2009.
