Giving your Garden A Boost

Story Title: Giving your Garden A Boost
Episode: Eight
Broadcast Date: 12th October 2013
Presenter: Kim Syrus

We all know that a good garden starts with good soil and there are plenty of ways to improve your soil at home.

Feeding Your Soil

  • Applying gypsum helps increase drainage in clay soil spreading mulch will retain moisture through the hot dry summer months
  • Adding compost, aged manure and other organic matter helps hold water, especially in sandy ground, it builds soil structure, and feeds the earthworms
  • It's not just the earthworms we're feeding, there are tiny, microscopic organisms that also live in our soil too which have a very special relationship with our plants and are critical their growth and survival. These microbes bring our soils to life
  • There are a number of things we can do to keep our soil microbes healthy. Keep your soil moist but not saturated; microbes need both water and air to survive. A neutral soil pH that's not too acidic or alkaline is also preferred and, of course, give them plenty of organic matter to eat
  • It makes perfect sense that by adding extra microbes to your soil, with a fertilizer included, you will help inoculate poor and underperforming soil, vastly improve its efficiency and deliver nutrients for better colour, better flowering and better fruiting plants
