Reading The Weather

Story Title: Reading The Weather
Episode: 8
Broadcast Date: 11th May 2013
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

There's a science to weather forecasting so Trevor asks an expert.

Weather Reading Tips

  • Weather instruments such as temperature gauges are standard across the whole world to get accurate and consistent measurements
  • Rainfall, humidity, wind speed and direction are measured and fed into massive computers around the world and sophisticated models are generated
  • The 5 7 day forecast is reliant on the computer model being very precise
  • The chaos theory means 1 month or more forecasts cant be entirely accurate, so a statistical type of forecast is used instead of predictive
